How Serious is Water Contamination?
Findings of the two-year study conducted by the advocacy group National resource Defense Council (NRDC)
1.) It is estimated that over 900,00 people become sick every year from waterborne diseases. About 1 percent die.
2.) Over 49 million Americans drink water that contains radioactive materials such as radon and radium. The EPA estimates that 225 people each year get cancer from drinking radioactive water.
3.) More than 250,000 violations of the Safe Drinking water Act occurred between 1991 and 1992, affecting more than 120 million people.
4.) More than 90 percent of these violations resulted from failure by water suppliers to:
• Test water for contaminants
• Report contamination to the Environmental Protection Agency
• Use proper treatment techniques
• Notify the public of the violations
5.) Some states estimate that three to five percent of water systems falsify test results.
6.) State and Federal officials have repeatedly failed to take actions against violators. Of the 257,000 violations that occurred in 1991 and 1992, only 2639 violations were acted on at the state level and 608 at the federal level, a drop in the bucket.
7.) Although the notice of drinking water contamination is required by law, two-thirds of the cases are not made public. In about on-third of cases where the public was notified only 11 percent of the notifications were timely
